Ms. Amanda Dupont, C. Psych

Psychologist

With many years of experience working with a varied clientele, I have the necessary knowledge and understanding to assure clients that their concerns are being heard and that there can be hope to improve and feel better. I provide psychological counselling to children, adolescents, and adults. I also provide psychoeducational and psychodiagnostic assessment to children and adolescents.

My goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment for clients to explore their challenges with an objective professional. My therapeutic approach is based on gaining an understanding of the client, defining obstacles to their wellbeing, and using evidence-based (scientifically proven) treatments to help improve their everyday functioning and ability to enjoy life. I determine which therapeutic interventions are best suited to the client’s needs and include techniques such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), elements of dialectical behaviour therapy (in particular using mindfulness and acceptance), and attachment-based techniques. When providing results for assessment, I try to ensure that the information is clear and the recommendations are applicable. I provide individual as well as systemic (usually school-based) recommendations with assessments.

Clinical experience

Over the years, I have heard the life stories of many people from diverse walks of life. I began my psychological counselling career in a shelter for abused women and children, providing individual and group counselling to women who had been involved in conflictual romantic, interpersonal, and family relationships. The focus was on understanding the cycle of violence, improving self-esteem, and learning assertiveness and autonomy.

I worked for over a year as a career counsellor in a non-profit organization. My role was to provide vocational counselling and assessment to help clients gain insight into their skills and interests.

I also have many years of experience working in various school settings providing individual therapy services, consultations to parents and school staff, career counselling, and psychoeducational assessments. The psychological therapy I provided to children and adolescents was most often related to anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and self-harm. I also provided therapy for stress, academic pressures and future career goals, family dynamics, bullying, study skills, crisis intervention, and emotional or behavioural difficulties. The psychoeducational assessments focused on learning, developmental, or adaptive difficulties with an emphasis on recommendations and accommodations to help students reach their academic potential.

Throughout my career, my passion has been my work in private practice. I have enjoyed establishing connections with, and providing short- and long-term individual therapy to children, adolescents, and adults. I have experience in helping my clients with various presenting concerns including depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, sexual abuse, trauma, stress, loss, self-esteem, and emotion regulation.
